Hello and welcome to Tompkins Basset Hounds.
We would like to tell you about us our bassets and how things work around here. We are a private family run kennel
with many years of experience in raising animals. My husband two children and I all play apart in raising our bassets.
Our children have always been blessed with being able to have the experience of being raised with animals. My husband
and I have had dogs in our life's from the time we where children to adults. We started raising basset hounds in 2003.
What started out as a hobby has turned into such a learning experience. We have been asked so many times over the
years why we chose basset hounds as our breed. We wanted a breed we felt was a gentle loving family dog. Bassets
are every bit that the most family friendly pet you could own. Bassets just have so much personality, always making
you laugh and just wanting to be beside you weather you are having a good day or bad.

We do not a set goal for the number of litters we will have we breed for quality not for the number of puppies we can
produce in a year. We (DO NOT) sell to puppy mills, brokers, or laboratories. We have put a great deal of time and
effort in breeding AKC registered basset hounds. Our first and most important goal with our bassets is their care and
health. Our main focus in breeding is temperament, longevity, conformation and making sure our dogs are free of genetic
disease. All of our adult dogs and puppies are raised inside around children and other animals. Our puppies are well
socialized we feel It is very important that a puppy be socialized at a very young age. Our puppies are handled by us
and socialized from the time they are born until they leave. We do not tie our bassets out side nor leave them
unattended when we are not at home. A safe well cared for dog is a happy dog.

Running a kennel and breeding program is a full time job and takes many hours in day to make it successful. We don't
feel as though we know everything about breeding bassets but we have learned a great deal of knowledge about the
breed. We are always doing our best to improve our breeding line. There are always new lessons to learn and always
expect the unexpected.

After a Dam is breed they are put on a very high nutrition diet during and after there pregnancy. Puppies are born in
our home and mother and puppies are monitored 24 hours a day. We put many hours in a day caring for our puppies
making sure they are getting  proper feedings from there mommy. We weigh and document puppies weight every week
and take weekly pictures of puppies. Every puppy is checked daily to make sure it is growing and developing properly.
Puppies are weened from there mommy between 5-6 weeks of age when they are then put on a high nutrition puppy
food. At around 6-7 weeks of age we start crate training puppies. Puppies are not allowed to leave until after 9 weeks
of age and have the OK from our vet. We continue a relationship with our clients after our puppies leave. We will be
there 24 hours a day for any issues, concerns or questions that our new family's may need us for. We will take a puppy
or adult dog back at any age and no matter the circumstances.

So often breeders are criticized for breeding. Many breeders are looked at as puppymills due to the over breeding that
has went on for years. The kind of breeders we need are one's that are responsible and want to better the breed and
we feel we are that. Here at Tompkins Bassets we do not over breed our Dams and Sire's. Our Dams are not breed
until they are between two and three years of age and have been approved for breeding. They are checked to make
sure they are in top health to be breed. We only allow them to have a limited number of litters and they are then
retired from breeding. After a Dam is retired from breeding they will either be placed up for adoption to an approved
home or stay here with us.

Rescue Bassets: We have been doing basset rescue on our own for years and have placed many bassets in wonderful
homes from New York to other states. We will help any basset in need of a home no matter the reason. Anyone needing
to re-home a basset or knows of one in need of rescue please feel free to contact us anytime.

We ask that you study the breed before bringing a basset hound into your family. A basset hound makes a wonderful
family pet with there gentle and well natured disposition. We sell all of our bassets with a limited AKC registration on
a spay/neutor contract. Unless we have agreed on a show/breeding contract.

Weather you choose a basset from Tompkins Bassets or somewhere else remember it is a life long commitment. We
have no interest in placing our basset's in homes that are just thinking about getting a dog. We want total commitment

We want to wish you the best of luck in finding that special new addition to your family.
Thank You Maureen Tompkins and family.
